5 Free Things to do at Duke in April 2024
Duke april 2024 is not only colourful due to the blooming flowers, but also owing to the diversity of events that take place at Duke. Whether you want to admire a solar eclipse, listen to the music of a jazz legend or go out with friends to the Duke University Bell Tower, you can find myriad free and fun things to do at the campus every day. At the editorial staff prefers a handful of five free events at Duke every month. Keep track of new events and save the date in your schedule for the next one in May!
April 8 – Eclipse Viewing Festival
Join us at the Sarah P Duke Gardens in the afternoon of Monday, April 8 for a few hours of indoor and outdoor nature activities and find a nice spot for the cosmic event that will temporarily dim our sky.
Best for children an adults; to which the public is welcome; parking fees may apply.

The Nasher Museum of Art invites you to their monthly family day. This time, due to the coming of the Earth Day, you will be able to experience the unique opportunity of expressing your commitment to the green cause by creating your own art with the help of the Scrap Exchange obtruding and taking stuff with you to make your work. Furthermore, the Piedmont Wildlife Center will contribute to the unique atmosphere of the event by allowing visitors to mingle with live animals.
Scheduled to take place from 1 to 3 p.m., the event is open to the public.
April 14 – Mary Lou Williams was Our First Lady of Jazz
A talented pianist and a composer, Mary Lou Williams worked with such famous jazz musicians as Duke Ellington, Dizzy Gillespie and Miles Davis. Her contribution to composing and performing is still highly regarded by the fans of jazz music. In addition, she also made a big contribution to the life as the artist-in-residence from 1977 until her passing in 1981. Today, the students have the Mary Lou Williams Center for Black Culture on campus.
There will be a celebration of Williams and her music at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 14, in Duke University Chapel . The Chapel Choir, the North Carolina Central Vocal Jazz Ensemble and several guest artists will play Williams’ music as well as other works that inspired her as part of Duke’s Centennial celebration .
The night before, at 8 p.m. on Saturday, April 13, the Duke Wind Symphony will debut her final unfinished work in a free performance at Baldwin Auditorium.
