Cataracts Linked to Loss of Bone and Fracture Risks
Cataracts people with cataracts may have an increased risk of developing osteoporosis and fractures related to loss of bone, a study in Taiwan shows.
The study in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society makes use of information about 57,972 cataract patients at the Buddhist Tzu Chi General Hospital in Taiwan and 57,972 controls without cataract patients when an average onset of osteoporosis and fracture of 17,450 patients with cataracts and 12,627 of the controls developed over an average of 6.4-year follow-up. 3. Acquiring a cataract diagnosis was associated with a 29 percent higher risk of developing osteoporosis or fracture. 4. The risk was reduced by 42 percent among participants whose had cataractored surgery.
Specifically, the sources stipulate that were associated with:
- 43 percent higher risk of suffering from osteoporosis
- 16 percent higher risk of hip fracture
- 25 percent higher risk of spine fracture (vertebra)
- 24 percent higher risk of any other fractures
