Vaughan Gething the 50 year old politician, Vaughan Gething, will be the leader of the Welsh Labour party and the first black head of government in Europe. He will be confirmed as first minister next week, having secured a win in the most fiercely fought leadership contests in his country against Education Minister Jeremy Miles. The leadership contest followed the resignation of Mark Drakeford in December 2023.
As the news reports , the new leader, who has become the first Black leader in any European country, won 51.7 percent of the vote on Saturday. Promising to address the deep challenges facing Wales, from the cost-of-living crisis, angry farmers and sluggish Welsh healthcare and education systems, he also stated .
Gething was born in Zambia, a former British colony. He is the son of a white veterinarian from south Wales and a Black chicken farmer from Lusaka. The family moved to Wales when he was two and later settled in England after suffering racism in the Welsh countryside. In the context of the general election this year, Gething would be a key player in the Labour Party’s bid to end 14 years of Conservative rule. “We look forward to campaigning with Vaughan in this new chapter for Wales, to deliver Labour governments across Britain,” wrote Party leader Keir Starmer on X.
